Living with Tourette’s: A Journey of Understanding, Healing, and Blessings

As someone who grew up with Tourette’s, I thought I had a solid understanding of the condition. But when my daughter began showing symptoms, I quickly learned that being a parent navigating this journey is a different experience entirely. It has been challenging, humbling, and, above all, deeply rewarding as we adapt and grow together.

Recognizing the Signs

When my daughter began opening and closing her hands repetitively, I knew to keep a close eye on it. Then came the more extreme, jerky head movements, which started to impact her daily life. The tics became so intense they caused headaches, stomach aches, and exhaustion, leaving her feeling sick and overwhelmed. As a parent, it was heartbreaking to watch.

We acted quickly to get her evaluated and began looking for ways to help her feel better. Instead of turning immediately to medication, we chose to focus on healing from the inside out, addressing the root causes of her symptoms.

Adapting and Finding Support

Our journey has required significant lifestyle changes, but we have been immensely blessed along the way.

  1. A Flexible Education Approach:
This year, we decided to homeschool part-time. On the days we aren’t homeschooling, she attends an amazing, trusted daycare where she feels safe and cared for. Next year, we’ll be transitioning to full-time homeschooling, and we’re so excited for the opportunity to tailor her education to her unique needs.
  2. An Incredible Care Team:
We’ve been blessed with an outstanding chiropractor and functional neurologist who have gone above and beyond for our daughter. Our functional neurologist has taken her under her wing, making her feel loved and cared for in ways that go beyond just medical treatment. Their dedication has been a beacon of hope for us during this process.
  3. Nourishing the Brain:
Understanding that Tourette’s is a neurological condition, we’ve become mindful of the impact that diet can have on her brain health. We’ve prioritized whole, nutrient-rich foods and avoid processed options. Although we already eat non-processed foods, it’s been important to be mindful of that.

Finding Balance

We’ve also adjusted how we structure our days to prevent overstimulation. Simple changes, like limiting outings to one activity per day and allowing for plenty of rest, have been game changers. When she’s exposed to something loud or new, we make sure to follow it with quiet time so her system can reset.

Over time, we’ve come to recognize the warning signs of overstimulation—where she becomes drowsy, slurs her words, and struggles to think clearly. These moments remind us how important it is to remain vigilant and proactive in her care.

Healing is Not Linear

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that healing is not a straight path. It’s an up-and-down journey with progress, setbacks, and everything in between. Some days, it feels like we’re winning; other days, it feels like we’re back to square one.

Through it all, I’ve come to appreciate the small victories. Each smile, each moment of peace, and each breakthrough with her care team reminds me that we’re moving forward, even when the steps feel small.

Our Gratitude

This journey has been challenging, but it’s also shown us the depth of our blessings. We’ve been surrounded by incredible people who care for our daughter and have helped us navigate this road with love and compassion.

To other parents walking a similar path: trust your instincts, advocate for your child, and lean into the support of those around you. Healing is a process, and while it’s not always easy, it’s filled with moments that make it all worthwhile.

We’re excited for the future and the opportunities ahead as we continue to learn, grow, and support our daughter. She has taught us resilience, patience, and the beauty of hope—and for that, we are endlessly grateful.
